Digital Rights Management (DRM)
Each file in the Altnet library is copy protected with best-of-breed digital rights management (DRM) security protections. Altnet licenses DRM technology from Microsoft Corporation to protect music and video files.

Altnet GoldFile™ Signature
Altnet applies the Altnet GoldFile Signature to the files after they have been protected with DRM.
This allows for greater control and security for the file, including,
1. allowing the file to appear in TopSearch results
2. giving the file a distinct gold colored icon in search results
3. allowing Altnet to track the number of times the file is downloaded
4. ensuring the file can be found and downloaded on every search
5. guaranteeing that users who tamper the file are not able to share it as a gold icon, ensuring all users always receive the pure, master file.

Digital Rights Management License Server
Altnet maintains control of the Digital Rights Management License Server.
This server performs several critical functions including:
1. receiving requests from end users who wish to license DRM Files
2. denying or issuing licenses to end users as appropriate
3. storing statistical and historical information about the number and types of licenses issued

Altnet's DRM License Server platform comprises multiple computers configured for high availability, high speed and high security.

File Seeding and Fallback Servers
While the P2P network is a highly efficient way to distribute files, and greatly reduces bandwidth expenses, central file servers are still needed:
1. to initially “seed” files to peers
2. as a fallback to the P2P system
3. to ensure maximum quality of service (QOS) in instances where the P2P network is not able to deliver the file

Customers may use their own seeding and fallback servers or hire Altnet to perform this function on their behalf.

Channels
Altnet, in partnership with Sharman Networks, offers a selection of premium channels within Kazaa. These channels feature downloadable content, news, games, and interactive features. Users may access channels for free, but may be required to purchase individual files or a subscription to view the files contained inside of them.

Altnet Links
Once your content is offered via the Altnet network, Altnet allows any customer to offer their files on their own websites, at no additional charge. The integration is easy, requiring the customer to merely add special links onto their web pages. When the link is clicked, a visitor to the customer’s website is able to easily download and purchase a file. Best of all, Altnet handles all the servers, storage and bandwidth.
